They need to interview the suspect and a detail like that would be brought up in the interview and prosecution process as they go through the persons life with a fine tooth comb.

In other words I don't think the ATF is denying it they are just not confirming it.

This detail would have rapidly been shared around amongst the investigators internally and WSJ thought it was valid enough to publish.

I am not saying it is accurate but we just have to wait and see.
