An easily replaceable influencer, and starting to age out of the target audience - young, middle classes/better off aimless or spoiled college kids - he was equipped to go after.

His rhetoric didn't really hold up once his audience started having to leave their bubbles and experience the Real World. Raising real kids, paying bills, dealing with customer or employer demographics has a way of teaching flexibility that doesn't jibe with absolutist, autocratic philosophies.

Kirk was becoming expendable. So he could be easy to throw away, there's always some other young conservative that could replace him.
