13. The knifing was the saddest part

She never returned to her original form after that. I used to follow tennis back then.
I didn’t like her much at first because I was a Steffi Graff fan (after Chris Evert retired) and because of the grunting…I thought (like some others) that it was a gambit to distract her opponents. But I became more sympathetic to her after that attack and though it was not her fault felt much cooler toward Graff, when she continued to win after. I knew it was unfair to Graff since you couldn’t expect her to retire because a nutcase stabbed Seles. But these things are not rational..somehow it seemed unseemly when she kept on winning after such a blatantly unfair thing took Seles out.

I felt sympathetic towards her after that and cheered her on when she returned. But she could never again focus or play well or return to anywhere near her old form..
