Trump wanted to be a NFL owner.

He owned a football team in a rival league, USFL in the 1980s.

USFL had success as long as they did not compete against the NFL.

He and other owners moved the USFL schedule to the fall, which helped kill the league.

Some analysts felt he wanted to force a merger.
