He was instrumental in convincing Biden to quit the race last year. I don’t think he would risk his own legacy, going out on a low note, bitterly holding on to power, while facing a primary challenge from someone much younger and more in synch with where the party wants to go. Losing such a primary would be beyond humiliating.

I also would expect him to step down from leadership after the midterms, though in my opinion he should do that immediately.

He’s had a decent run (both in the House and the Senate now) and was effective as majority leader during Biden’s term, but he’s just not the right person for the job at this time.
