8. The racism came first

The racism that has been a cancerous undercurrent-- and often blatant violence-- has permeated the United States since before its founding. The U.S. Constitution then codified it by describing the African slaves as less than human, (3/5ths of a person).

Following the Civil War, the failure of the U.S. government to prosecute and penalize the southern secessionists allowed this atrocity to continue to metastasize through the society till the present. Pathetic and beyond embarrassing. "The land of the free?" Not so much.

Fascism came later but the combination of those evil forces then multiplied by runaway capitalism and oligarchy has driven this country into a ditch it may never recover from.
