Let's talk about Trump's Canadian tariffs being voted down in the House.... - Belle of the Ranch

Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump's Canadian tariffs being voted down in the House.

Okay, topline news. The House voted 219 to 211 to disapprove of the national emergency Trump declared. Without that national emergency, Trump's tariffs on Canada end up voided. Six Republicans voted to end the tariffs. Kevin Kylie of California, Jeff Herd of Colorado, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Don Bacon of Nebraska, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Dan Newhouse of Washington. One Democrat voted to keep them. Jared Golden of Maine. My guess is he's thinking the tariffs might help his state's blueberry producers. He's retiring. So the rest of the state suffering under Canadian boycotts won't have the opportunity to voice their displeasure.

It was hard for Democrats to even get this to the floor because much like the Epstein vote, Republican leadership in the House was blocking it. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said, "For months, sycophantic Republicans in the House have tried to block us from acting on behalf of the American people. Today, House Democrats forced a successful vote to detonate the Trump tariffs on Canada."

Before the vote, Trump posted to social media threatening Republicans. Any Republican in the House or the Senate that votes against tariffs will seriously suffer the consequences come election time, and that includes primaries. Tariffs have given us economic and national security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.

In a different post, Trump said, "Canada has taken advantage of the United States on trade for many years. They are among the worst in the world to deal with, especially as it relates to our northern border. Tariffs make a win for us. Easy. Republicans must keep it that way.

Among the worst, especially about the northern border among Okay, I'll just ask. What other country is he making deals with about our northern border?

Okay. So, what happens now? It's just a bill. It's only a bill. It goes to the Senate. It's possible it gets through the Senate. Generally, senators don't like Trump undermining the Constitution framework that gives Congress power over tariffs. That being said, if it makes it through the Senate, Trump will almost certainly veto it. It's unlikely the House could come up with the votes to override a veto because right now most Republicans still don't understand they're paying the tariff tax. It's noteworthy that even with Trump openly threatening primaries, some House Republicans just didn't care. They think he's losing his juice. And after the recent swings away from Republicans, who can blame them?

That being said, this puts Congress people on record as supporting or opposing Trump's trade policies. This will come up during the elections because the share the average American pays of the cost of the tariffs is expected to go up by about 30% this year. Almost all Republicans and one Democrat in the House just took ownership of that increased expense for Americans.

Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
