They Voted for Trump. His Tariffs Took Down Their Family-Owned Sawmill - Big Take

Nov 14, 2025 The Big Take | Bloomberg Podcasts
For years, Mackeys Ferry Sawmill in North Carolina relied on exporting its goods to China and Vietnam after a dip in domestic demand for high-quality hardwood. But President Donald Trump’s trade war with China dealt a blow that the mill’s owners say they couldn’t come back from. In July, just months after the president announced his “Liberation Day” tariffs, they decided to shut it down.
On today’s Big Take podcast, Bloomberg economics reporter Shawn Donnan goes to the “Old North State” to understand the ripple effect of tariffs on one of the oldest industries in America and how the mill’s owner feels about Trump and his policies, one year after voting for him in the ballot booth.

Straight out of New York City. These poor lumber guys lost the whole shebang over this nonsense. Demonizing libs was such a dumb move for these guys. Hopefully the scales will fall from their eyes in future elections.

that when Republicans say that they are good for business they mean Big Business.
But surely they didn't vote Republican soley on economics. People usually vote on a number of issues. The owners still support the Republicans on social issues, right?
Even if these owners lose both sawmills I doubt if they will have to worry about a trans person walking into the same bathroom with them at Walmart, but they can feel that same assurance at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

It’s gonna take a lot of “school of hard knocks” learning to get these MAGAts to wake up. Since they refuse to learn from critical thinking that a failed businessman who’s bankrupted everything he’s owned might just be a bad choice to run an economy.

They could have called any business in or around the NYC area and could have been told that Trump
is a terrible businessman, a crook, is mobbed up, and doesn’t pay his bills.

So these crackers are whining about what is happening to them but still saying they would have voted for tRump is
insanity. They never mention what rumpscallions policies are doing to other folks, just themselves. One issue capitalists that could care less about the rest of the USA. Poor me, fuck you. C'mon blue states, send us some more money.
