Neil Dutta, head of economics at Renaissance Macro Research, says that the US economy is 'deeply unbalanced' as Americans grow more concerned about the weakening labor market and inflation. Dutta says that the labor market is weakening at an even faster pace than estimated, as could come for the affluent next.
White House National Economic Director Kevin Hassett said the record-long government shutdown means that some of the economic data that was supposed to be collected in October may never be recorded, making it difficult to get a comprehensive look at the health of the US economy.
Ive been told that some of the surveys were never actually completed, so well never, perhaps, even know what happened in that month, Hassett told CNBC on Tuesday. Were going to be staring a little bit in cloudy, cloudy weather for a while until we get the data agencies back up.
Statistical agencies, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau, havent been able to gather data during the shutdown, leaving certain reports that rely on manual collection methods particularly vulnerable.
Theres a growing risk that the BLS wont be able to publish an October consumer price index, a popular inflation gauge, while economists are also concerned about another survey of households that produces the unemployment rate.
