West Virginia upsets No. 15 Duke despite finishing game with only 5 players due to mid-game scuffle
West Virginia may have lost its entire bench, but it still got the upset win. The Mountaineers defeated No. 15 Duke in a stunning victory, 57-49, after going down to only five eligible players following a mid-game scuffle.
The game, held at Colonial Hall at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, started off narrow, with the Blue Devils holding a three-point lead at halftime. But even without any substitutions, Sydney Shaw, the only West Virginia starter who was not tossed, led the Mountaineers with a 16-point performance to hold on for the victory.
Right after the halftime buzzer, West Virginia's Jordan Harrison and Duke's Jordan Wood started to get into it, with some shoving and yelling. Other Mountaineers and Blue Devils got involved in the scrum, leading to sweeping discipline for both teams ahead of the second half.
Harrison and Wood were both ejected for fighting, while five other West Virginia players Jordan Thomas, Kierra Wheeler, Gia Cooke, Carter McCray and Madison Parrish were thrown out for leaving the bench. Duke's Ashlon Jackson and Ari Roberson were given flagrant one fouls for making contact.
