DU gets grant for restoration

Ducks Unlimited has come up $377,000 to help secure and manage Prairie Pothole Region wetlands, the organization announced recently.

The money came from a $174,900 grant from the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Climate Adaptation Fund and was matched by Ducks Unlimited and other partners.

Created by the movements of glaciers around 13,000 years ago, the Prairie Pothole Region covers most of the eastern Dakotas and rises into Canada. It consists of shallow depressions called prairie potholes. These often fill with water and are important wildlife habitat, scientists say.

These prairie potholes are used by wetland birds such as ducks for nesting and raising their young.
