City commissioner files temporary restraining order against Deadwood, recall election scheduling delayed

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Deadwood City Commissioner Blake Joseph filed a temporary restraining order against the city government and Finance Officer Jessicca McKeown Tuesday, preventing the commission from scheduling his recall election for now.

Deadwood’s city commissioners planned to schedule the election at a special meeting Tuesday following McKeown’s verification of a petition to recall Joseph. Now, the petition will need to be verified in court before any election discussion can officially take place.

Multiple people criticized Joseph during the special meeting’s public comment session, including Deadwood resident and business owner Sianna Gross.

“It’s up to us to protect the finance officer and every resident who participated in the recall process from further harassment or interference,” Gross said. “We deserve leadership that serves, not threatens the community.”
