Empathy is usually regarded as a virtue, a key to human decency and kindness. And yet, with increasing momentum, voices on the Christian right are preaching that it has become a vice.
For them, empathy is a cudgel for the left: It can manipulate caring people into accepting all manner of sins according to a conservative Christian perspective, including abortion access, LGBTQ+ rights, illegal immigration and certain views on social and racial justice.
Empathy becomes toxic when it encourages you to affirm sin, validate lies or support destructive policies, said Allie Beth Stuckey, author of Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion.

(8,265 posts)I don't think Jesus put a caveat on compassion.
Only those without sin are worthy of assistance?
We know what Jesus said about that.
Empathy isn't a sin, it's a virtue.

(12,298 posts)Explained in more than one way by Jesus of Nazareth, namely against religious clerical critics is more an observation than a revelation. You not only judge yourself but render yourself incapable of being part of the Good. Calling good evil and evil good.
Simple, cutting your own spiritual throat, enforced by practice and active opposition. This of course is worse than Jesus' contemporaries who accepted all institutional "necessary" evils to put him down. The words are clear as a sword- as are the beatitudes in their various forms. When rage and "righteousness must finally rebound on the Biblically damned.

44 They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?
45 He will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.

(6,616 posts)and then throw empathy out with the bathwater. Empathy is more about trying to understand the thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and situations of the person. It may also involve an offer of help, but not necessarily. It does not include an offer of help that would support the other person's dysfunctional behaviors or do long-term harm to that person's well-being. "I understand that you are hooked on narcotics and that you can't afford narcotics, so I would like to help you pay for them" would be an example to avoid.

(36,925 posts)Thats not to say individual Christians dont have empathy, but Christianity from day one has always been about harvesting individual Christian empathy. They collect donations under the auspices of empathy, but unlike other charities dont have to disclose any benefit to the community or disclose where that money actually goes which commonly is for political purposes and enriching church officials. Which is not to say Christianity is unique in this regard. Skimming off the top of charitable contributions is really the oldest profession.
If anything these people are just being honest about what their true motives are.
