Bills fire Sean McDermott

Monday morning brought another bombshell coaching move in the NFL. According to multiple reports, the Bills have fired Sean McDermott. The move comes less than 48 hours after the team’s 33-30 overtime loss to the Broncos in the divisional round of the playoffs.

McDermott went 98-50 over nine seasons in Buffalo and the Bills advanced to the playoffs in eight of those years. McDermott won eight games in those trips, but the team was never able to get over the hump in the postseason and advance to the Super Bowl.

When the Bills slid from 4-0 to 7-4 in midseason, PFT noted that the team might have an appetite to make a change as they head into a new stadium for the 2026 season. McDermott was able to right the ship with a 5-1 finish and a win over the Jaguars in the first playoff round, however.

The failure to get any further has created the 10th coaching opening since the start of the 2025 season and, should he want to coach again right away, it makes McDermott an appealing candidate for the seven other jobs that have yet to be filled around the league.

The Bills just have bad timing. When they have really good teams it’s always while there are really great teams. The Marv Levy Jim Kelly Bruce Smith team of the early 90’s was at the same time as the Jimmy Johnson Cowboys and continued Niners excellence. Now McDermott and JoshAllen (we say it as one name) has been in the age of Mahomes.

They’ve lost to KC 4 times and once to Joe Burrows Bengals.

It must be tough to coach while your boss has his finger on the trigger.

That game was very close and the Bills could have won and gone on to the Superbowl.

Marino only got to one Super Bowl and it was against Montana’s Niners juggernaut.

Tark lost to three different great teams - Dolphins Steelers Raiders.

And I was more heartbroken about losing Bo Nix after feeling great for five minutes.

A part of me wishes Buffalo had won that game.

These days I kind of fear happiness. Seems to be so little of it and then it crashes
