We’d like to think Buster Posey, Tony Vitello and his Giants staff are closer aligned with managers who staunchly refuse the notion, including Cleveland’s Stephen Vogt, Arizona’s Torey Lovullo, Cincinnati’s Terry Francona and Texas’ Skip Schumaker, who told The Athletic, “There’s a competitive advantage when you have a smart pitcher and a smart catcher. I don’t want that to be lost in the game.”

There’s also the matter of the pitch clock winding down through an episode of confusion.

“The whole idea concerns me,” Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow said this week on KNBR (680AM). “It stunts a pitcher’s growth, and you can’t take away a catcher’s ability to think. Another thing is how your arm feels. That slider you threw two innings ago isn’t working right now. Can’t throw it. But they don’t know that on the bench. They just have a statistical sheet."

Jenkins points out that "there are times, especially with a nervous pitcher or a youthful backup catcher, when the (bullpen choice) works best. And it’s a growing trend around the game, with several teams planning various levels of experimentation."

But an entire game? Keep that in mind as you watch the Marlins this year.
