Pretender

“I can do anything I put my mind to”
That’s what I’ve heard so often
From the good and the great,
Not so much from the poor
But from my superiors
Who’ve outperformed expectations
And made themselves wealthy
In cash and prestige

So why am I struggling to find my way
In this world of worries, calamity, and strife?
Should I put on the mask of overwhelming ability?
Should I wear the clothing of uniformity?
And be the person expected by society
Doing the normal? Carrying obligation?
Am I nothing if not cut from the cloth
Of corporate regulation?

--

Can I be myself?
Not harnessed to the wagon
With the other mules
Pulling their weight ever growing?

Can I live for me?
Doing what I wish
Holding up my hands to the sky
To catch the sunlight warm?

Or am I just a pretender?
A clown, a silent mime?
Imitating the others
Who swarm in conformity around me?

When will I be me?

When I finally retire, maybe I can claim my time and stop pretending.
