A Metro Detroit father kept a secret for 50 years, but now his son is on a journey to uncover the truth. And what he found is one of the largest and most valuable comic book collections in the country.

1. This story brought tears to my eyes.

I took a job in Alaska when I was 19, and when I came back my room had been cleaned out and all my comic books had been thrown away. I owned that iron Man, and the first Thor, the first fantastic four, first Spider-Man and a couple hundred other old comics from when I was a child.

2. The son may be richer than Orange Julius Caesar.

As a teenager, from 1965 to 1971, I bought around $60 worth of DC comic books off the rack (mostly 12 cents per issue) and kept them in decent, but not as good a condition as I would have had I realized how valuable they would be 50 years later. I sold the collection a couple of years ago to a dealer for almost $3400 (50 percent of the resale value). Best investment I ever (unintentionally) made.
