Image of PFC St Gibson there.
snip-PFC St. Clair Gibson, my great uncle, was a Buffalo Soldier of the 371st Infantry Regiment, 92nd Infantry Division. He went missing near Serravezza, Italy, on Nov. 11, 1944. After 81 years, the DPAA identified him on May 7, 2025. He was awarded nine medals, including the Silver Star. Last week my father (82) and I had the official identification briefing. Im so proud of my dad for pushing for this all these years, and grateful our family finally has closure.
Some of the replying comments made me mist up
**this is not my uncle, I found the story on reddit. The photo of that very young black man from the very segregated US fighting & dying in Europe to defeat facism moved me.
His familys' quest to demand the honor of a fallen warrior over so long past moved me

I wonder why he got to be a Buffalo Soldier, was it chance, family member who was a Buffalo Soldier, friends, luck of the draw?

(23,840 posts)Because they were black soldiers in the army during the civil war 1866.. because of their skin color and curly hair, the American Indians admired their fighting style and tenacity. Buffalo Soldiers fought in the Spanish American War..they have quite a legacy. PBS had a documentary about them during Black History Month

Snip-"Army Pfc. St. Clair M. Gibson, 30,"
snip-"In September 1943, Gibson was assigned Company F, 2nd Battalion, 371st Infantry Regiment, 92d Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action on Nov. 18, 1944, after a battle in the northern Apennine Mountains near Seravezza, Italy. His remains were not recovered following the war."
His family chased those details for 80 years.
