The Metro bus system and the VA Medical Center are close to reaching a deal that would once again take veterans to the front door of the Omaha hospital.

On June 1 a systemwide bus change closed the front-door service and put vets at two new bus stops near 42nd and Center Streets, a few hundred yards from the hospital.

The change added nearly three dozen stairs or a climb up a steep grassy hill. Neither new stop has a shelter, and one is on a narrow sidewalk with a retaining wall. Some veterans reported seeing people leaning on the bus stop sign for support because there are no benches.

That situation was intolerable to Johnny Farnen, a Navy veteran who experiences seizures and gets treatment at the hospital.
