the destruction of the cat populations significantly contributed to the spread of the plague.

(112,111 posts)3. Yes. Cats are (along with rats) the predominant host for the fleas that carry plague and it killed them as well.
I'm sure sick or suspect cats were killed in large numbers as well--even if they did not quite understand the transmission cycle.
