Pototoes - observation

The potatoes I planted in the ground are growing okay.

But the ones in the bags are twice as big in their growth and look as though in a week or two will have flowers. Same two types of potatoes in the bags as in the ground, two different ones 1 russet and 1 yellow, 2 bags of each and 4 rows of each.

If the bounty is about the same or more in the bags I think next year I'll do all bags.

I think I may have tried potatoes years ago but I don't remember the result. This time I'm growing them in a big 24" pot. I've just got maybe one more layer of soil to top them off with. The foliage looks great and it's so tempting to poke down in the dirt to see if there's anything growing under there. I just spotted the first little flower starting today. These are red potatoes.

And I'm trying a crazy thing I saw on youtube, growing some in a cardboard box! I have a bunch of Amazon boxes and one seemed about right to try this as described in the video. It's about 18" long, 8" wide and maybe 12" tall or so. I put 3 red potatoes in, in a row, and all are growing foliage that looks good so far. One was way slower to come up, but it's getting there now. Once the potatoes are (hopefully) harvested the box can go into the recycle bin.

and 30 feet of Yukon Gold. I been growing potatoes in this same hill for at least 10 years. I mix goat manure with the soil every year all over the garden. I dig up my potatoes with a bucket on my small John Deere tractor by scooping and flipping the dirt over. When all is done I end up with at least one heaping big wheelbarrow full of potatoes.
