Related: About this forumI'm an old guy who likes those Hostess cupcakes sold in stores...they've gotten so small I'm stopping...
I know this is for the best but it is unbelievable to me how tiny these cakes have become, pretty soon they'll just be a dab of cake with a drop of icing. I'm going to make my own cake using budget mixes...probably better...sigh...

(7,128 posts)I used to buy their fresh baked raisin bread. It was the size of a normal loaf of brand named bread. In fact, in some ways, it was larger in that it was wider than the brand name breads.
We were at the store last night, and I showed what they were selling these days -- still the "Fresh baked" raisin bread, but the entire loaf was maybe 6 inches long and 4 inches wide. I used to buy this bread to make overnight french toast, or to make bread pudding. To get the amount I'd need to create that dish like I did before, I figure I'd have to buy 3 of these loaves. The price is $2.50... what I used to pay for the large loaf. Obviously, we're not doing that. To me, that goes beyond even shrinkflation!

(2,004 posts)and I swear it was almost 90% water. It was supposed to be chicken and dumplings. There might have been two little dumplings and a couple of fragments of chicken scraps, but the rest was water.
You can't get a regular sized candy bar anymore. They are all "snack size" or "party size", which I think is the same thing, not much bigger than the last joint of your thumb.

(99,154 posts)I suspect you can freeze them too.

(40,494 posts)If I didn't freeze them, I'd eat them in one day! 😋

(99,154 posts)I just don't make them, they'd probably never make it to the freezer! And I'd be sick too, just like a six year old kid.

(53,440 posts)I have a house brand supermarket that offers factory made English muffins. The size rises and falls over about 3 month periods. First up: $1.99 or even $1.49. Large muffins. A month later, full price $2.49 or $2.99, smaller muffins. A month later, smaller yet, $2.99. Next up: coupon! 2 for $2.49, large muffins again. They stimulate demand with low prices and large size, then recoup those costs with smaller muffins in the ensuring months.

(40,494 posts)Now, I like Little Debbie better. I wish they made a Twinkie, too.
I always add a tablespoon of cocoa powder to my chocolate cake mixes & recently I've been adding grated fresh ginger. Yum!!
Happy baking!

(2,117 posts)The timing of this post is perfect for me. I have always loved those things. I think my mom put them in all of my school lunches back in the 50s and got me hooked. Over the years I'd only get them on road trips when I stopped for gas and grabbed a package to scarf down while driving. But I haven't had any in recent years until just this past Friday. Had to make a 40 mile drive to meet a family member, was supposed to pick up a couple gallons of water and I was running late. So I stopped at a Dollar Tree on the way to the freeway to grab the water and something I could munch on the way. Saw the box of Hostess Cupcakes and said 'Oh yeah, flashback, I'll have those'. When I got in the car and opened the box I couldn't believe the size of them now!!! You'd have to eat 3 of them to make one of the old ones! (I didn't, honest!)
Seriously the most blatant example of shrinkflation I think I've seen. So sad.

The budget mixes are better but they lack the chemical bite of those cupcakes plus the greasy, sugary trans fat filling. Hey, I'm not judging you, remember I ate 'em too.
Shrinkflation is hitting everything. Toilet paper gets much narrower, I'll be able to use i for hair ribbon.
I just wonder who these assholes think they're fooling with this shit. I know I'd rather have things stay the same size and be able to make a choice on whether or not I can afford it as is.

(50,464 posts)I've been avoiding them for health reasons. But could easily tell myself that smaller is better.

(10,475 posts)We used to stop by on the way home and pick up any of the hostess treats for 10¢.
These included Twinkies, Cupcakes, Sno-Balls, Ding-Dongs, Suzy-Q's, Ho-Ho's & all the Pie flavors.
And since the food was not taxed, a dime got anyone of of these treats.
Multiple dimes, meant no after school treats. Our mom would figure out what we did.
