Frankenstein starts today on Netflix.

Guillermo Del Toro’s new version of the classic Mary Shelley novel is the most faithful version of the book that has yet been attempted. I saw it at a theater the other night and was mesmerized by it’s beautiful art direction, cinematography and lush musical score. The creature is very close to how Shelley imagined him and Jacob Elordi is fantastic in that role, but all of the actors hit their marks. My only criticism is that by telling the story in flashbacks, which, if I recall, was how the story is originally told, the narrative flow was continually being interrupted. I thought that having a big part of the climax coming at the beginning of the film was a mistake and that the story would have been more impactful if the narrative was told in a straight chronological order. As it is, it is a very worthwhile watch.
