Health authorities in densely-populated Hong Kong and Singapore have warned that COVID-19 cases are spiking, as a resurgent wave spreads through Asia.
The virus activity in Hong Kong is now quite high, Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the citys Center for Health Protection, told local media this week. The percentage of respiratory samples testing COVID-positive in Hong Kong recently reached its highest in a year.
Severe cases including deaths also reached its highest level in about a year to 31 in the week through May 3, the centers data shows. While the resurgence is yet to match the infection peaks seen in the past two years, rising viral load found in sewage water and COVID-related medical consultations and hospitalizations suggest the virus is actively spreading in the city of over 7 million people.
Rival financial hub Singapore is also on COVID alert. The city-states health ministry released its first update on infection numbers in almost a year this month, as the estimated number of cases jumped 28% to 14,200 in the week through May 3 from the previous seven days while daily hospitalization rose around 30%. Singapore now only provides case updates when there is a noticeable spike.

(325 posts)wear a mask indoors shopping and doctor appts. My runny nose, that I thought was allergies, became the head cold from hell, that was really COVID. I am 74 years old, this happened a day after Easter. So I was contagious at Easter, my sil was feeling a little off, he was contagious, by the Wednesday after Easter, I had Covid, my husband had Covid my daughter and sil all had Covid, the grand kids always tested negative. My husband, daughter, sil, had normal colds and tested negative within a few days. It took me 3 weeks, just yesterday to finally test negative. I live in California, I took paxlovid and felt better in a few days. After the 5 days treatment, I then got regular cold symptoms and tested positive for Covid. Since, I didn't want to infect anybody else, I kept testing every 3 to 4 days. I am certain I would have gone to emergency, if I hadn't taken paxlovid. COVID is still here and is not now just a cold for everybody. This is the first time I have ever gotten Covid.
