The Russian economy is rapidly plunging into a protracted crisis. According to the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, more and more companies are reporting financial difficulties, staff cuts, and a complete halt to investment.
Problems are mounting at all levels – from falling demand and mass non-payments to a shortage of working capital. More than two-thirds of enterprises have already switched to austerity mode, cutting costs even on basic services. And most regions of the Russian Federation are effectively on the verge of default: financial reserves are depleted, and six entities of the Russian Federation have less than 1% of their annual budget in their accounts.
