A Fort Lee physical therapist has been sentenced to prison for her role in a large-scale health care fraud scheme that targeted Amtraks employee health care plan and resulted in millions of dollars in fraudulent claims, U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer announced.
Taejin Kim, 44, was sentenced Thursday by Madeline Cox Arleo in federal court in Newark to 12 months and one day in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. ... She was also ordered to pay more than $2.2 million in restitution. ... Kim previously pleaded guilty on June 11, 2025, to conspiracy to commit health care fraud.
According to court records and statements made during the proceedings, Kim participated in a scheme between October 2019 and June 2022 that submitted fraudulent and medically unnecessary claims to Amtraks health care plan. ... Prosecutors said Kim allowed her professional license and business bank accounts to be used to facilitate the billing operation in exchange for a share of the proceeds.
Authorities said other members of the conspiracy recruited Amtrak employees by offering cash payments in return for access to their personal and insurance information. ... The information was then used to submit false claims for services that were never provided or were not medically necessary. ... Federal investigators determined that the conspiracy involved dozens of Amtrak employees and multiple health care providers.

(17,417 posts)2. Just how is restitution enforced?
Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick agreed to pay restitution to the city, but in spite of seemingly living a lavish lifestyle, has only paid a pittance of what he owes.
