WASHINGTON, D.C. (7News) Newly released Metro data for the fiscal year that ended this past summer shows big improvement in crime, but also problems with rail and bus service that Metro needs to work on.
The data is for Fiscal Year 2025, which ended this past summer on June 30. Metro said during that fiscal year, the crime rate fell significantly compared to the year before. Metro said the number of crimes per million passenger trips fell from 6.5 in Fiscal Year 2024 to 3.7 in Fiscal Year 2025.
Among other things, Metro credits its use of private special police officers, who were already patrolling stations but also began walking trains in the spring of 2024. Metro also said that increased fare enforcement, including on buses, and work by its crisis intervention team, which helps those experiencing mental health concerns, played a role in the drop in crime. Among the crimes with significant drops were motor vehicle theft, larceny, robbery and assault.
Towards the end of the recent fiscal year, in June, on-time performance fell sharply for Metrorail riders. Metro said the problem stemmed in large part from issues with its aging signaling system. Metro has previously said upgrading the signaling system is one of its top priorities in the future, and
7News covered the problems in June.
