Install GrapheneOS Before Your Phone Becomes the Checkpoint - David Bombal

Your phone is becoming the checkpoint.

Governments around the world are pushing age verification and age-check systems deeper into apps, platforms, and devices. Apple has its Declared Age Range API. Google Play has the Play Age Signals API. But GrapheneOS has drawn a very different line: it is not building this kind of age-check infrastructure into the operating system. In this video, I explain why that matters, how GrapheneOS differs from iOS and mainstream Android, and why a privacy-focused Pixel setup gives you more control over the device in your pocket. GrapheneOS does not make you invisible, but it does reduce trust in Google by default, lets you use sandboxed Google Play only if you need it, and gives you a phone that shares less out of the box. Then I walk you through how to install GrapheneOS on a supported Google Pixel using the official WebUSB installer. You’ll see what you need before starting, which browsers work, why a good USB-C cable matters, how to enable OEM unlocking, boot into Fastboot Mode, unlock the bootloader, flash GrapheneOS, lock the bootloader again, and complete first boot securely. I also show why locking the bootloader matters for verified boot, how GrapheneOS uses hardware-backed security, and how to check the verified boot key hash against the official GrapheneOS install guide. This is a step-by-step GrapheneOS install guide for anyone who wants a privacy phone, less Google trust by default, and more control before phone-level identity checks become normal.

I mostly use my flip phone as a phone. Sometimes I use it to send and receive short texts. I don't want a phone that does anything else.

Likewise, the computers in my car are just smart enough to run the engine efficiently while minimizing pollutants, deploy the airbags in an accident, and keep the brakes from locking up in a panic stop. I don't want a car that communicates with the outside world, has a distracting touch screen, or functions as a complete entertainment system receiving content that I have to pay for from some satellite in the sky.

Let my phone be a phone, my car be a car, my camera be a camera, and my wallet be a wallet.
