Computer (sort of ) question
I have friends who like to send short videos of their grandkids, and there's never been any problem viewing them. Until now, that is. Once the video is downloaded, clicking on it brings up this instead. My question: is it legit? It says I need to pay 99c; would that be per view or a one-time fee?
Thanks in advance!

(22,470 posts)You can get it from the Microsoft store.
Alternatively, you can download VLC media player for free which should have it built in.

(17,983 posts)Some articles say how to install extensions, but the one I like is downloading the free VLC player and that's that.
I love open source software. If you download it from an official site (NEVER CNET) it is solid and free.

The HEVC codecs are no longer available for free on the Microsoft Store. You must download a third-party video player like VLC to play back HEVC video files, or pay the 99 cents for Microsoft's official codecs. We recommend against downloading the official codecs from unofficial sources.

(17,983 posts)Apple gave use HEIC and apparently HEVC, and sets HEIC as a default (I still get it even though I tell my systems not to ever use it)
Google gave us webp, which I have to convert in order to post on DU, and which MANY sites use because it's compact.
Microsoft must also do something of the sort, but I try to avoid anything of theirs.
Fortunately, Apple and LibreOffice and others handle "Microsoft office" formats well.
It's pretty maddening.

It's the absolute gold standard in completely free media players and will handle anything you throw at it. You can set it to update automatically, although there haven't been very many updates since it was released. It has lots of good features that are really worth exploring.
Hope you are well

(16,260 posts)I'm once more enjoying grandbaby pics! Also very busy making protest signs; I can no longer join the crowd, but I can supply those who do. Seems I really did retain some good stuff from the sixties . Hope all is going well for you, and thanks again!
