Can't wait for the Crosslake Connection to open this Saturday? Go on a virtual tour of the Judkins Park Station with NPI

It’s time to complete the 2 Line!

This weekend, after the better part of almost two decades of planning, design, construction, and testing, light rail service will finally begin across Lake Washington, connecting Redmond and Bellevue with Seattle and Mercer Island. All indications are that it’s going to be one of the biggest openings in Sound Transit’s history. The world’s first light rail on a floating bridge is definitely a cool news story, but what’s even cooler is the freedom of mobility it’s going to bring to people around the region.

If you’re among those eagerly waiting for Saturday to arrive, we have a treat for you, to help tide you over until the big day: a little virtual tour of Judkins Park, one of the two new stations joining the system. Judkins Park will be the first new light rail station in Seattle proper in nearly half a decade, after Northgate, Roosevelt, and U District, which opened in 2021 to strong ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Judkins Park is located at Interstate 90, between 23rd Avenue and Rainier Avenue, in Seattle’s Atlantic neighborhood, not far from the boundary with Mount Baker.

How to ride the 2 Line like a pro

When the Crosslake Connection opens on March 28, the regional light rail system will have more than quadrupled in size from the first regional ribbon cutting in July 2009. From those first 12 stations to a total of 50 (including the T Line) as of March 28, Link light rail is taking the region further than ever.

With a growing system comes growing complexity. Gone will be the days where all trains serve the same stops, the days when the “1” Line was both a literal and figurative description of the light rail system. From March 28 onward, as a passenger you will need to stay aware of which train you’re on relative to where you’re wanting to go.

None of this is unusual from a regional, national, or global perspective, but it is new for our region. In fact, to this point our region has been unique as the only multi-line, non-interlined system on the West Coast. An ‘interlined’ system is one that has a core layer of ultra-frequent service served by multiple lines, fed by single-line branches.

So as we look forward to opening day, here are five tips for riding the new 2 Line and the Crosslake Connection like a seasoned pro from day one.
