Rad Power Bikes faces new setback after federal safety warning

Seattle-based e-bike company Rad Power Bikes is facing another setback as it fights to remain in business.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Monday issued a warning about certain Rad Power batteries, which the federal agency said ignite and explode unexpectedly, especially when exposed to water and debris. The warning noted there have been 31 reports of fire, including 12 reports of property damage that totaled about $734,500, some of which happened when the battery was not in use or charging.

The warning comes after Rad Power earlier this month issued (WARN) a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification in anticipation of a potential shutdown, which could happen as early as January.

In a statement to the Business Journal, a Rad Power spokesperson said the 31 incidents came from more than 100,000 batteries. The spokesperson added independent, third-party labs have tested the batteries and confirmed they comply with the highest industry standards.
