Unionized Herald staff ratify first contract with company

EVERETT — Unionized journalists at The Daily Herald ratified their first contract with the company on Thursday, bringing an end to two years of negotiations.

The contract includes guaranteed raises and protections for the newspaper’s unionized staff, organized under the Everett NewsGuild. The guild is currently comprised of six news reporters, a photographer, an opinion editor and two sports writers.

Newsroom staff at The Herald unanimously voted to form a union in 2022. In 2024, the Everett NewsGuild went on strike in response to the newspaper cutting 10 employees of the 18-member unionized staff.

The Herald began publishing in 1901. Sound Publishing acquired the newspaper in 2013. Sound’s parent company, Black Press Media, was sold to Carpenter Media Group in 2024.
