Uber Eats agrees to pay $15 million in settlement with Seattle
Uber Eats will pay more than $15 million in a settlement with Seattle over alleged violations to independent contractor and app-worker minimum-wage laws, officials announced Tuesday.
A total of 16,120 delivery workers will be eligible to receive a share of about $14.8 million as part of the deal, according to the settlement agreement signed in July. The city's Office of Labor Standards said it's the agencys largest settlement in its history.
"Gig workers ordinarily would've had a really hard time trying to get redressed if they hadn't brought this to us," Steven Marchese, the director of OLS, said in an interview. "Because many times these workers try to contact customer service with the app company, may or may not get much success at it, and if it's not a lot of money, they might let it slide."
The bulk of the settlement, about $13.5 million, will address alleged violations to Seattles independent contractor ordinance, and about $1.45 million will resolve alleged violations of an app-based minimum wage ordinance, per the settlement agreement.
