DONE! Governor Bob Ferguson signs two right to repair bills into law that will benefit all Washingtonians
An eight-year effort to bring sorely-needed right to repair laws to Washington State finally ended in triumph today with the signing of HB 1483 and SB 5680, championed by State Representative Mia Gregerson (D‑33rd District: South King County) and sponsored by Gregerson and Senator Drew Hansen (D‑23rd District: Kitsap County).
Flanked by lawmakers and activists, including yours truly, Governor Bob Ferguson added his signature to both pieces of legislation in an afternoon bill-signing ceremony at the Capitol Campus in Olympia. Each bill will reduce waste and make it easier for Washingtonians to get devices they already own repaired so they can keep them in working and serviceable order for longer rather than having to discard them.
Senate Bill 5680 requires manufacturers of wheelchair equipment to provide owners of wheelchairs and independent repair shops with access to documentation, parts, embedded firmware, and tools. House Bill 1483 requires original manufacturers of digital electronic products (like smartphones, tablets, and the like) to make parts, tools, and documentation available to independent repair shops on fair and reasonable terms, with exceptions, including for motor vehicles, set-top boxes, and medical devices.
House Bill 1483 is known as the Right to Repair Act.
