UVA rejects Trump administration education compact
From CBS19
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The University of Virginia is rejecting the Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.
In a message to the U.S. Department of Education released Friday afternoon, UVA Interim President Paul Mahoney wrote that a contractual arrangement predicating assessment on anything other than merit [would] undermine the integrity of vital, sometimes lifesaving, research and further erode confidence in American higher education.
In a separate message to the UVA community, he also thanked the Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Student Council and other members of the community for their input and feedback regarding the compact.
Nine universities across the country received the compact, and three have already declined: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania and Brown University.
UVA is the first public university to decline the compact.
