Virginia Beach GOP chair ousted in bitter party feud over control and transparency

In a dramatic late-night vote that capped more than a year of escalating infighting, the Republican Party’s 2nd Congressional District Committee voted Wednesday to remove Laura Hughes as chairwoman of the Virginia Beach GOP, accusing her of mismanagement and failing to perform her duties.

But Hughes says the move was political payback — and an affront to the grassroots Republicans who elected her.

“This was a ‘screw you’ to the Virginia Beach voters,” she said of her detractors’ actions in a phone interview Thursday, “because they wanted this small little group who likes to stay in charge, and they installed a chair that will do their bidding. And I am most likely going to file an appeal with the state Republican party.”

The 11-4 vote took place after four hours of closed-door deliberations at the Chesapeake GOP office, with 15 ballots cast, including five by proxy. The use of proxies and the closed nature of the meeting drew swift criticism from more than 50 Hughes supporters gathered outside, who said the decision undermined transparency and local control.

In the Party of Responsibility. She failed to hate as intently as it is required of her position. She’s a bitch. Kick her to the curb. Get a real patriot in that job.

A sitting Republican Governor basically losing their public opinion to a Gay Republican is not anything you’d ever imagine happening.

It looks like Reid got through it (and Youngkin’s people vastly overreacted) but I still have questions. Someone planted a simmering attack bomb on Reid 10+ years ago? The Tumblr account was started in 2014. He wasn’t even in the radio yet. Despite his family political history, 10 years ago I can’t imagine there being that kind of effort towards a gay republican. Why would someone think he had any shot at all of running for anything in their party?

Republican playbook. If you don’t understand it attack it. If your “opponent, foe, enemy” is talking the truth, shout over them. If you don’t know bad stuff about someone, make something up, ask a teammate to provide corroboration. So much time and energy wasted on making a wrong point. But the pay and perks are good.

If Abbie wins, which she should, they are going to be wide open. Youngkin is toast. On Facebook (yes Facebook) stories about from the local affiliates everyone of them is just done with him.

And we haven’t even gotten to public appearances by Winsome yet. She’s a doozy. They better have her nailing down the contents of 5 3x5 cards and shutting the lid on her for anything at all off the cuff.

The top will be completely cut off. 🤞
