Candidates for Cove Mayor gear up for election
Leroy Stevens, who served as mayor of the small town east of Baytown for most of its existence, passed away in May prompting the city council to call for a special election. Additionally, former Alderwoman for Position 1 Debbie Maley stepped down from the position in June after council called for the election. Her seat has since been added to the ballot. Two candidates have filed for the position of mayor, and two for alderman.
Early voting begins July 29 and closes Aug. 11. Voters will cast their ballots 1 to 5 p.m. at city hall, located at 7911 Cove Loop. Election day is Aug. 15.
Jermey Owens and Shara Giles are looking to make history as the second elected mayor in the town’s history.
Cove has seen rapid growth with the development of new neighborhoods. Cove has a 4.54% growth rate, with a population of 737. Its population has increased by 33.27% since the most recent census in 2020, which recorded a population of 553. Candidates are addressing how they will balance keeping the integrity of the small town’s charm with the needs of incoming residents.
