Socorro ISD seeks voter approval for tax rate election

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Socorro Independent School District (SISD) voters will head to the polls in less than two weeks to decide whether to allow the district to raise its tax rate.

In August, the SISD board voted unanimously to call for a voter-approval tax rate election, or VATRE, that could bring in close to $50 million a year.

Proposition A on the SISD ballot reads as a tax increase: “Ratifying the ad valorem tax rate of $1.0589 per $100 valuation in the Socorro Independent School District for the current year, a rate that will result in an increase of 14.91 percent in maintenance and operations tax revenue for the District for the current year as compared to the preceding year, which is an additional $15,080,585.”

Voters will either vote “for” or “against” the proposition.
