Gulf Coast anglers feeling sting of Trump tariffs on aluminum

Anglers would be up a creek without aluminum. The lightweight, corrosion-resistant metal is found in important fishing gear such as nets, motor mounts, raft frames, and even more essential equipment. "The best reels in the world are made of machined aluminum," according to Outdoor Life.
But it's suddenly become much harder for anglers along the Gulf Coast and elsewhere to get many aluminum-based products. In March, the Trump administration instituted a blanket 25 percent tariff on all imported aluminum, most of which comes to the U.S. from nations such as China, United Arab Emirates, and Canada, by far the nation's leading aluminum supplier. Last year, Canada accounted for more than 40 percent of all imported aluminum, according to Tradeimex.

For equipment imported from China, both the aluminum tariff and the uniform rate on Chinese goods, which currently stands at 51.1 percent, would be assessed. Tariffs are also likely to affect manufacturers in South Korea, a "huge supplier" of the recreational fishing industry, Outdoor Life reported.
Im struggling to think of any one [segment of the fishing gear industry] thats not going to be affected, ASA vice president of government affairs Mike Leonard told Outdoor Life in March. With all these compounding factors, no ones held harmless in all this.
