Winona ISD board approves second election after tied May race

WINONA, Texas — Winona ISD trustees on Monday approved calling for a second election to settle a tied vote that happened in the May 3 race.

In the election for the Place 3 trustee seat, incumbent Randy Hawkins, who serves as board president, and challenger Luis Hernandez both received 137 votes. After that tie, the candidates had a chance to withdraw, but neither wanted to. A recount led to another tie.

So on Monday, Winona ISD approved calling for a second election to determine the winner. Election Day is set for Tuesday, June 7.

Early voting runs from Tuesday, May 27 through Friday, May 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday, June 2 to Tuesday, June 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The locations will be Smith County Elections Office, located at 302 E. Ferguson Street in Tyler, and Winona Community Center, located at 520 Dallas St. in Winona.
