Cumberland County Election Commission temporarily relocating after building catches fire
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Tenn The Cumberland County Election Commission is relocating after sustaining major fire damage on Thursday, March 26. The 20,000 square foot building houses the Cumberland County Elections Office and the Highway Department.
The Crossville fire chief, Chris South, said about 40% of the building was on fire. Crews called in mutual aid from Cumberland County, and a team of about 65 firefighters got the fire under control in roughly 45 minutes.
"It was moving very rapidly," South said. "Conditions when the crews initially made entrance was very dangerous. They met heavy heat and fire conditions in both of the fire rooms from floor to ceiling."
South said the department called in the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation out of an abundance of caution. However, because the fire damage was so extensive, investigators were unable to completely clarify the cause of the fire.
