College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell denounces Confederate 'flagging' event in October

College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell issued a statement late Friday denouncing a Confederate "flagging" event planned on the campus by the S.C. Secessionist Party.

When the secessionists announced their planned "Flagging of College of Charleston" on Facebook July 30, the post called out McConnell, who previously owned a Confederate memorabilia store and defended public monuments to Confederate soldiers.

"Several campus members have contacted me voicing their thoughtful opinions on a possible 'flagging' to be held in my honor later this fall by a fringe political group," his statement said. "This is an 'honor' I do not welcome and one that I denounce wholeheartedly."

McConnell did not mention the S.C. Secessionist Party by name in the statement.
