Luzerne County will continue with drop boxes for mail ballots in Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton

WILKES-BARRE — Luzerne County will continue to use drop boxes in Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre to collect mail ballots for the Nov. 4 general election, according to a 4-1 vote from the county election board on Wednesday night.

The drop boxes will be at the county Penn Place Building in Wilkes-Barre and the Broad Street Exchange Building in Hazleton. The county used the same locations for the May primary election.

A drop box is an option for voters who don’t want to go to the polls on election day and don’t want to mail a ballot through the U.S. Postal Service. Critics claim drop boxes encourage fraud and ballot box stuffing and discourage voters from voting at more-secure polls on election day.

Drop boxes became a common option in Pennsylvania counties during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Drop boxes aren’t explicitly mentioned in state election law, but the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that they are permissible.
