Innamorato says Allegheny County remains committed to helping naturalized citizens vote, despite new restrictions

Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato said she remains committed to helping naturalized citizens register to vote despite new restrictions enacted by the federal government.

At a county elections board meeting Monday, Ms. Innamorato said her administration will work to ensure new citizens are registered to vote after U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced only state and local election officials will be permitted to provide registration services at naturalization ceremonies.

Ms. Innamorato’s comments came in response to concerns by the League of Women Voters — which has helped new citizens register to vote at naturalization ceremonies for decades.

Ruth Quint, co-president of the League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh, said the local chapter of the advocacy group went through a very lengthy vetting process with USCIS in 2016 to assure their nonpartisan credentials and allow them to help register voters at naturalization ceremonies.
