Clackamas County to move forward with public safety levy for May election

The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners agreed on a proposal for the public safety levy that will be up for voter approval in the May election.

The levy would maintain current services for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, which would otherwise have to reduce staff if the current tax rate were to remain due to rising costs and other factors.

After a discussion on Tuesday, Jan. 27 and a policy meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 10, the board approved an option that would raise the current levy rate by 0.166 cents to 53.4 cents per $1,000 of assessed value for the next five years. County staff estimated the annual cost to be $59.48 for the average Clackamas County homeowner under the approved ballot measure language.

“We are confident that we are at a very good place, that the levy will last the five years and sustain that through the next five years without the general fund to keep it going, if that had to be done, and that can also be managed through vacancy savings, which we are doing now,” said Clackamas County Sheriff Angela Brandenburg.
