Lost Colony of Roanoke Island was likely never lost

WAVY TV 10

Many in our region have heard about the Lost Colony, either through books or the well known play. It speaks of the first English colony to settle on Roanoke Island. A small group sailed back to England, then returned to find the colony had vanished — only leaving behind the word "Croatoan" scrawled on a tree. What happened to them is a mystery, according to legend. If you ask Scott Dawson, he would tell you the legend is fake.

Cool. Thanks. Remember going there when we lived in Raleigh back in 50s. Think of it often. Silent Type Sunday #1

That is where those First Nations people with blue eyes and blonde hair came from.

So, it is a double-edged thing. Yes, they were 'lost' as far as the European peoples were concerned. But, they were not lost, they just went somewhere else and intermingled.

Having worked at The Lost Colony for a few seasons, We always discussed what happened to them. The general consensus was that they had intermingled with the tribes that were friendly to them, most likely Manteo's people.

I suspect that a few were captured and intermingled with other tribes as well.
