My last encounter (Durham) at the DMV to renew my license/get a Real ID was probably the best DMV experience I've ever had! It was an appointment and went very smoothly. I don't have to renew again until 2029, thank goodness.

(25,964 posts)Yesterday at a suburban MO-DMV, I was first in line when they opened---and STILL had to wait an hour and a half to be served, because they didn't tell me I could schedule in advance with an app I don't have (and never heard of) on a cellphone I don't have. Other people had it worse. At least I knew exactly what I needed to bring in, and had it all in order.

(27,756 posts)But there are DMV employee shortages statewide. I just heard on the show State Lines that the Sec. Of Transportation asked for funding for sixty-one more positions on top of the number that are yet to be filled. The NCGA approved the funds. My understanding is that the few employees that they have already travel intrastate to multiple agencies to cover staffing shortages. Do a NC Government job search and you'll see the situation.
Not making excuses. Just a little background info.

(32,527 posts)has been playing. They have refused to provide funding for the additional number of employees needed to keep up with the population growth. End goal? Privatization. It now appears they are trying to slide funds into the budget for next year to set them on that road.
