NM-SOS: Lopez Askin pulls ahead in Democratic contest for New Mexico Secretary of State

Dona Ana County Clerk Amanda López Askin was leading in the Democratic primary for the Secretary of State by a more than 8,000-vote margin over Santa Fe County Clerk Katharine Clark, according to unofficial results Tuesday night.

The outcome will pit the winner against Republican candidate Ramona Goolsby, a nurse practitioner, in the Nov. 3 general election. Goolsby ran unopposed in the primary election.

Lopez Askin and Clark clashed several times during the primary, as both sought to paint themselves as experienced elections officials who could stand up to the Trump administration.

Lopez Askin told Source NM she was “cautiously optimistic” just after 8:30 p.m. with a lead in Bernalillo and Doña Ana counties.
