New Jersey Republicans ask for federal monitors in critical county ahead of governor's election

The U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing a request from New Jersey Republicans to send election monitors to oversee the handling of mail ballots in a key county that will help settle the state’s Nov. 4 governor’s race.

The New Jersey Republican State Committee told Harmeet Dhillon, who leads the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, in a letter that federal intervention is necessary to ensure an accurate vote count in Passaic County.

State officials disputed that characterization and called any federal intervention “highly inappropriate.”

The suburban county has been a Democratic stronghold. But it shifted to President Donald Trump’s column in 2024 and may be critical to GOP gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli’s hopes against Democratic nominee Mikie Sherrill.

I entirely trust the Passaic County Board of Elections.

The arguments made by New Jersey Republicans are based on speculation and no evidence of fraud.

Just because our country leans democratic consistently isn't proof of fraud.
Just because the mail-in ballots are within the venue of Passaic County isn't proof of fraud. There are Republicans who work for the Board of Elections as well as Democrats.
Just because there are no security cameras for the locked room for the mail-in ballots isn't proof of fraud. There are other counties without cameras.
And the election last year where TSF made inroads can be explained: Paterson and Passaic both have sizable Muslim populations who have a large turn-out. They were angry with Biden about Gaza and turned their ire against Kamala Harris more than supporting Trump. I'm pretty sure they will return to their usual support for Democrats next month.
