Omaha mayoral candidates voice support for changing date of City Election to combat voter fatigue

We asked the mayoral candidates what they’d like to see happen.

“When I wanted to do it before, I did not get the City Council’s support to do it,” said Mayor Jean Stothert. “They wanted to leave it the way it was. But I think it is worth trying to do that again.”

“If the Legislature passes the law that would allow the citywide elections to be combined with the state elections — if the City Council was in favor of that as well — I would certainly work to pursue that,” said mayoral candidate John Ewing Jr.

If the city elections were moved, Omaha could save about $1 million to $1.5 million, depending on the year.
